Andreas Brugger, St. Charles Borromeo at the Council of Trent

1798
Fresco
Parish church, Hohenems, Austria

Borromeo was a leading figure in the final session of the Council, writing a number of its key documents.

The words in the book held by the boy are Concilium Tridentinum, "The Council of Trent." The book in the foreground has the words Sancti Ecclesie Patres, "the holy Fathers of the Church." And of course, the number 1798 on the cloth on which the book rests is the date of the fresco.
